I had the epiphany that tea regulates my nervous system (likely so obvious for some, but maybe not for all), so I looked up the science and thought to share!
1. Physical Warmth = Soothing Signal
Warm liquids activate thermoreceptors in the mouth and throat, which can signal safety and comfort to the brain. This can help shift your body out of “sympathetic mode into parasympathetic mode.
2. Ritual and Presence
The simple act of preparing and sipping tea can be grounding. The ritual helps bring awareness to the present moment, which can calm racing thoughts and reduce anxiety.
3. Certain Herbs Have Calming Effects
Some teas have natural nervous system-supportive compounds:
-
Chamomile: Mild sedative, reduces anxiety.
-
Lemon balm: Uplifts mood and calms.
-
Peppermint: Relieves tension and soothes digestion.
-
Lavender: Eases stress and promotes relaxation.
-
Green tea (L-theanine): Calms without sedation, balances caffeine.
Bonus: Deep Breathing While Sipping
Drinking tea naturally slows you down, and you often take slower, deeper breaths between sips, which further activates parasympathetic response.
So yeah, tea is more than just cozy, it’s a legit nervous system hack. Do you have a favorite tea? (Mine is Chamomile and @danieltyack loves a Hibiscus) Or do you want recs based on how you’re feeling?
